Abdullaah bin Mubaarak - may Allah have mercy upon him said: I sat out for hajj to the sacred house of Allah and visiting the masjid of His Prophet may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. As I was in the road, I suddenly saw a black figure and when I managed to distinguish it I realized it was an old woman wearing a garment and a headscarf made out of cotton, I said to her:"Assalaamu 'Alykum Warahmatullahi Wabaraktuh"She replied, "Salaamun qawlan min rabi-Raheem [Peace: a word from a Merciful Lord.]"

He [ibn Mubaarak] said: I said to her, may Allah have mercy upon you! What are you doing here [lost]? She replied: "Wa man yudlilil Allah fa la haadiya lah [Whomsoever Allah causes to err, there is no guide for him]"

So from that I understood that she was lost, so I asked her where do you want to go? She replied: "Subhaanalathee asraa bi 'abdihi laylan minal masjid-il-haraami ilal masjid al-aqsaa [Glory be to Him Who made His servant go on a night from Masjid al-Haraam to Masjid al-Aqsaa] I understood that she had finished her hajj and wanted to return to Masjid al-Aqsaa.Then I asked her how long had she been in this place? She replied, "Thalaatha layaalin sawiyya [three nights while in sound health.]"

I told her I do not see any food with you that you eat? She replied "Huwa yut'imunee wa yasqeen [He (Allah) gives me to eat and gives me to drink] So I asked her what do you use for wudhu? She said, "Fa inlam tajiduu maa-an fatayamamu sa'eedan tayyiba [and if you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth and wipe your faces and your hands therewith]

I told her I have some food with me, would you like to eat? She replied "Thumma atimuu as-siyaama ila al-layl [then complete your fasting until the night] I said to her this is not the month of Ramadan, she replied "wa man tadawa'a khayraan fa inAllaha shaakirun'aleem [and whoever volunters in goodness then verily Allah is thankful, knowing]

I told her it is permissible to break your fast during travel, she replied "wa an tasuumu khayrun lakum in kuntum ta'lamuun [and fasting is better for you if you but knew]

I said, why do you not talk to me in the same way i speak to you [i.e meaning without Qur'aan] she replied "ma yalfidu min qawlin ila ladeyhi raqeebun 'ateed [he utters not a word but there is by him a watcher at hand (meaning the angels are with the human recording his speech and deeds all the time.)]

I said from what people are you? She replied "wala taqfu ma laysa laka bihi 'ilmun inna sam'a wal basara wal-fu'aada kul olaaikakaana 'anhu mas uulah [and follow not that of which you have not the knowledge; surely the hearing and the sight and the heart,all of these, shall be questioned about that.]"

I said I have made a mistake so please forgive me, she replied "la tathreeba 'alykum al-yawma yaghfirulllahu lakum [no blame shall be upon you this day may Allah forgive you]

I said will you allow me to carry you on my camel? She said "wa maa taf'aluu min khayrin ya'lamhulAllah [whatever good you do Allah is aware] so my camel sat down. She said "Qul lil mu'mineena yaghudhu min absaarihim [tell the believing men to lower their gaze] so I lowered my gaze and told her climb up on the camel and as she was about to climb up on it the camel rose up and tore her clothes where upon she said "Wa ma asaabakum min museebatin fabima kasabat aydeekum [and whatever calamity afflicts you it is due to your own deeds] I told her wait until I tie the camel and she replied "Fa fahamnaaha Suleymaan [So We made Sulaiman to understand it] After I tied the camel I told her climb on top of it, when she did she said "Subhaanalathee sakhara lana haatha wa ma kunna lahu mugrineen wa inna ila Rabina lamunqalibun [Glory be to Him Who made this subservient to us and we were not able to do it and surely to our Lord we must return.]

I grabbed hold of the reigns of the camel and started to walk quickly and making loud noise, she said "Waqsid fee mashyika waghdud min sawtik [And pursue the right course in your going about and lower your voice] then I started walking slowly and humming poetry, she said "Faqra'uu maa tayasara min al-Quraan" [Recite whatever is easy for you from the Quraan]


I told her I have been given goodness in plenty, she said "Wa maa yatathakaru ila olul al-baab [and none but those with understanding comprehend this] After having walked with her for a bit I asked her, do you have a husband? She replied "Yaa ayyuha al-latheena aamanu laa tasa'alu 'an ashyaa-a inn tubda lakum tasu'kum [o you who believe do not ask about matters if made plain to you may cause you harm]

So I remained silent and did not speak to her until we reached her caravan. I said to her who do you have [from family] amongst this caravan? She replied "Al-maalu wal-banuuna zeenatul hayaati dunya [Wealth and children are the beauty of this world] So I understood that she had children, I asked her what are their duties in hajj? She replied "Wa 'alaamaatin wa bi najmi hum yahtaduun" [And as signs and through the stars they are guided]

So I understood that they must be guides for the people. Then I saw small huts and buildings so I asked her about her children's names, she replied "WattakhadaAllahu Ibraheema khaleela [Allah took Ibraheem as his khaleel] "WakalamAllahu Muusa takleema" [And Allah spoke directly to Muusa] "Ya Yahya khudil kitaaba bi quwwa [o Yahya grab hold of the scripture firmly]

So then I called out O Ibraheem, Muusa, Yahya! And suddenly three young boys looking like moons [in beauty] came towards us and when they got ready to sit down their mother said "Fab'athuu ahadakum biwariqikum haathihi ilal madeenati falyanthur ayuha azka ta'aaman falyatikum birizqin minhu [Send one of you with this money to the town and let him look for the best food and let him then bring that food] One of the boys went and came back with the food putting it in front of me, his mother told me "Kuluu washrabu hanee-an bima aslaftum fee al-ayyaam al-khaaliyyah [Eat and drink joyfully because of what you used to do in days past]

I said, right now your food is haraam upon me until you inform me about her affair [i.e why she only speaks through the Quraan] They said:This is our mother, she has been like this since 40 years back, not speaking anything but Quraan, fearing that she might otherwise err and thus cause ar-Rahmaan [Allah] to be displeased with her. So Glory be to al-Qaadir [Allah] for this.

Then I said:"Thaalika fadhlulAllahi yu-teehi man yashaa-a waAllahu du fadhlin 'atheem [That is the bounty of Allah, He bestows it upon whomever He wishes and Allah is the owner of great bounty]

How to Be Proactive

Being proactive means thinking and acting ahead - basically, this means using foresight. It's a great method for avoiding more work down the road but also can be extremely important for averting disasters, planning well for the future and for instituting systems at work, in study, and at home that make life easier for not just you, but others as well. Many of us look to proactive people as the instigators of action and creative ideas in society. Here are some suggestions for helping you to become a more proactive person.

   Self Reflect, look at yourself and ask some questions:
   
   
   • What kinds of tasks do or don't come your way regularly? For example, at work, at home, during study etc.
   • What kinds of tasks come in large groups?
   • What kinds of tasks need immediate attention when they arrive?

   Examine critically how you might perform those tasks more efficiently. Before the next rush:
   • Create a plan, procedure, checklist or routine to accomplish the task.
   • Recruit and instruct others to assist with an urgent or large task.
   • Gather information you will need to perform a task, or if necessary information comes from a flow of people who bring the tasks, create a script, checklist, or form to capture it consistently.
   • Look for steps in the process to eliminate, consolidate, or shorten.

   Try to prevent problems from ever arising. This means tackling possible failings in advance to prevent them from becoming a reality. Get into the habit of taking precautions and developing fallback plans.

   Develop a mindset that looks to solve problems instead of dwelling on them. Here’s how:
   • a. Define the problem (what is it exactly?)
   • b. Decide what needs to happen to overcome the problem and how you’re going to do that; and
   • c. Get on with it!

   Get ahead and stay ahead of less-urgent, day-to-day tasks. Doing so means that they'll be out of the way when rushes come and will not be worrying you unnecessarily. Pay particular attention to preventative maintenance, whether that means checking the fluids in your car, restocking your pantry, or setting aside a bit of money in savings each week. A little effort up front could save you from a larger crisis later.

   Know which tasks are priorities and which can wait. Write out daily lists of tasks and head the list, ‘I will do’ and not ‘to do’. Boldly cross off each item as it is achieved. Keep this list close at hand and let it direct your actions. If it goes too long without crossing anything off, reassess what you are doing to make sure that you do finish the tasks listed on it.

   Eliminate altogether any task that is truly unnecessary. Some things do not need doing, or do not need to be done by you. Do not waste time on them and do not allow a misplaced sense of guilt lead you into thinking that somehow you are responsible for them. If tasks are unnecessary, they will not add to your effort and are thus, a waste of energy. Be ruthless in making this assessment about the value of a task.

   Evaluate your procedures and processes as you use them. What works and what does not? Make notes for improvements, and incorporate those improvements during the next lull. Discard anything that does not work but take care to note when something is in need of tweaking and adjust it accordingly so that it does work.

   Try to anticipate needs. Are rushes seasonal? Are there extra activities associated with certain times of the day, week, month, or quarter? Can you prepare in advance? Look ahead and do not be afraid of the unknown. A small amount of future stability can be self-generated by planning ahead and being ready for those things over which you do have some control.

    Try to anticipate things you will need to know. Can you learn a new skill ahead of time? Can you apply a skill you already have in a new way? Watch the trends around you; keep up-to-date by reading and continuous learning. Proactive people are successful because they are immersed in unfolding history as well as understanding the lessons of the past.

    Look for ways to automate routine tasks. Computers can manipulate data in all sorts of ways. Even having a template or a standard plan of action can save time. If you work in a team context, delegation is also a form of automation, in that knowing the best person to do a task will automatically result in its being done to the best level possible, removing it from the pile of "to-do's". Thus, have in place a system that automatically moves tasks to those best suited to them.

Eid Milad-un-Nabi…what are the facts?

To Celebrate or Not to Celebrate…That is the Question

Some of us celebrate it with great devotion and diligence, while some of us are against it with an equally great vengeance. Some say it is our religious duty while others say it is nothing but bid’ah.

People argue about it. Families split up, friends forsake each other. And sometimes people literally fight over it and hurt one another.

So what is it that I am talking about?

I am talking about celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam), the Mawlid or Milad, as some of us say.

Yes, the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal came and went. But, ever wondered…. . what is the reality regarding the celebration of the birth of our beloved Prophet anyway?

Let’s examine the facts.

First of all, whenever a Muslim is faced with a problem or confusing situation, what are we supposed to do? Allaah tells us:

“O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allaah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allaah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination” [Nisaa’:59]

Referring it to Allaah and His Messenger means to turn to Allaah’s Book and the Sunnah of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam).

1. What does the Qur’aan say about the Mawlid?

Nothing. Yes that’s right…..NOTHING.

There is absolutely nothing in the Quraan that tells us to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam). Not one single ayah.

You see, all acts of worship are tawqeefi which means that they are not subject to personal opinion and it is not permissible to do any acts of worship except those which are approved by Shareeah.

So, for example, I cannot pick a special day or time, say the 22nd of every month, and start celebrating that day as a form of worship.

Why?

Because there is nothing in the Shareeah that permits me to do that.

Also, I cannot start praying three rakaah for Fajr from tomorrow, even if I want to worship Allaah more, because Fajr Salah is only two rakaat as commanded upon us by the Shareeah.

And similarly, if there is no order for us to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam), then we dont.

In fact, the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “Whoever innovates anything in this matter of ours (i.e., Islam), that is not part of it will have it rejected.” (Bukhaari).

Now someone might argue that we dont celebrate the Mawlid/Milad as an act of worship.

So let’s see what other evidences we have.

2. What does the Sunnah say about it?

Again, there is nothing in the Sunnah of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) that shows us that the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) EVER celebrated his birthday or that of his wives, children, or Sahaabah.

There is not a single hadeeth that tells us that he (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) thought this day was significant enough to celebrate it.

Just think…..if there was any good in doing so, wouldnt he would have done so himself and wouldnt he have ordered the Sahaabah to do so?

And obviously, it is not possible that he (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) forgot to tell us about it, Aoodhu billaah!

Did the Sahaabah celebrate the Mawlid/Milad?

The Sahaabah were witnesses to the revelation of the Quraan.

They had the Prophet right in front of their eyes.

They ate, drank, sat, slept, talked, walked, lived with the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam).

If they misunderstood anything or were mistaken, the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) immediately corrected them. And thus, their understanding and practice of Islaam was the best.

Yet, when we look at the lives and practice of the Sahaabah, we find that none of them EVER celebrated the birth of their beloved Prophet, whether during his life or even after he passed away.

Not Abubakr, not Umar, not Uthman, not Ali, nor Aaishah, Ibn Umar, Ibn Masud, Talha, Az-Zubair, not a single Sahaabi.

Doesn’t that prove anything?

The Sahaabah absolutely loved the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam). They gave up their homes, families, lives, everything they had… for his sake, in the blink of an eye. Yet this love did NOT promote them to celebrate his birth.

This love translated into the practical application of his teachings and NOT picking the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal as a day of celebration.

What about the Four Imaams and other Ulama?

Did any of the Imaams – Abu Haneefah, Maalik, al-Shaafi’i, Ahmad, al-Hasan al-Basri, do this or command others to do it or say that it was good? No. In fact, it was not even mentioned during the first and best three centuries.

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “The best of mankind are my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. (Bukhaari, Muslim and al-Tirmidhi) .

And if the ‘best of mankind’ didnt celebrate his birth, then we shouldnt either.

Actually, the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday appeared many centuries later. By this time, many of the features of true religion had disappeared and bid’ah had become widespread.

Think about it!

Can it be possible that the Sahaabah, the Imaams and the people of the best three centuries were unaware of the importance of celebrating the birthday of the Prophet or that they were lacking in their love for him?

And it was only those who came later who were aware of it or loved him more?!!! How can that be?!!

Actually, dear brother/sister in Islaam, TRUE love of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) is shown and proven by following the guidance that he brought. So follow his Sunnah to the best of your ability and don’t fall into innovated forms of worship. It is nothing but a trap of the Shaytaan.

“Say (O Muhammad): ‘If you (really) love Allaah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Aal ‘Imraan 3:31)

And remember the words of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) when he said:

“The best of speech is the Book of Allaah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The most evil of things are those which are newly-invented (in religion), and every innovation (bid’ah) is a going astray.”

(Muslim and al-Nisaa’i).
